Seconde journée d’études du programme Les pouvoirs locaux depuis l’Antiquité romaine (CHEC)

Mireille Cébeillac-Gervasoni (CNRS, UMR 8585) et Laurent Lamoine (CHEC)

Cette journée d’études est consacrée à l’examen des inter-relations entre pouvoirs locaux et sanctuaires depuis l’Antiquité. Il s’agira d’autopsier en autres les phénomènes suivants : les enchevêtrements des interventions publiques et des initiatives privées à l’intérieur des sanctuaires, l’importance et le statut des offrandes dans ce contexte, les aspects civiques du fonctionnement des sanctuaires et de l’organisation des cultes, des cérémonies, l’exemplarité de certains sites (sanctuaire de Mercure du puy de Dôme, sanctuaire du Puy-en-Velay). Les 9 communications prévues concerneront le monde grec et l’Occident romain et médiéval. Cette rencontre est la deuxième du programme du CHEC dédiée à cette problématique.

Les discussions sont prévues par thème (éventuellement après chaque communication)

La journée est ouverte à tout chercheur et étudiant intéressés

Enhancing and Exploring Epigraphic and Archaeological Data through e-Science

The organizers would like to bring to the attention of interested colleagues this upcoming event dedicated to the digital publication of a new corpus of Ancient Inscriptions from the Northern Coast of Black Sea (IOSPE = Inscriptiones Orae Septentrionalis Ponti Euxini).

Enhancing and Exploring Epigraphic and Archaeological Data through e-Science

Organisers: Stuart Dunn, Irene Polinskaya and Gabriel Bodard

The meeting will bring technical and editorial researchers participating in, or otherwise engaged with, the IOSPE (Inscriptiones Orae Septentrionalis Ponti Euxini = Ancient Inscriptions of the Northern Black Sea Coast) project together with researchers in related fields, both historical and computational. Existing projects, such as the Inscriptions of Roman Cyrenaica and Inscriptions of Aphrodisias, have explored the digitization of ancient inscriptions from their regions, and employed the EpiDoc schema as markup. IOSPE plans to expand this sphere of activity, in conjunction with a multi-volume publication of inscription data. This event is a joint workshop funded in part by a Small Research Grant from the British Academy, and in part by the eSI through the Arts and Humanities e-Science theme. The workshop will bring together domain experts in epigraphy, and specialists in digital humanities, and e-science researchers, which will provide a detailed scoping of the research questions, and the research methods needed to investigate them from an historical/epigraphic point of view.

AIEGL training grants

The Association Internationale d’Épigraphie Grecque et Latine offers grants of up to 1000 Euros to support Epigraphic Educational and Training Courses and Workshops.

The following conditions apply.

  1. Applicants must be AIEGL members.
  2. Due to limited funds, the maximum grant for any event will be 1000 Euros. Applications for smaller sums are encouraged and may have a better chance of success.
  3. Applications should be submitted by 28 February and 31 July, and applicants will be notified of the outcome by 15 April and 15 September respectively.
  4. Applications will be assessed and ranked by a commission of three AIEGL members (IIIviri praemiis dandis), to be appointed by the AIEGL officers. Awards will be made by the AIEGL officers on their recommendations, subject to sufficient funds being available.
  5. Events supported by AIEGL must be open in principle to any participant with appropriate and relevant qualifications and not restricted to students from particular institutions or countries.
  6. AIEGL is keen to support all forms of training in Greek and Latin Epigraphy, including the promotion of digital epigraphy, in line with its own objectives and priorities.
  7. Successful participants must submit a 300-word report within one month of the conclusion of the event in a format suitable for publication on the AIEGL web-site.

This bursary does not yet seem to be advertised on the AIEGL website; check back for updates. In the meantime, perhaps contact Angela Donati for further information.

Il Seminario è un’iniziativa volta innanzitutto a dottorandi, assegnisti e giovani ricercatori che intendano approfondire la propria formazione in tematiche relative alla disciplina epigrafica greca, allargare le proprie esperienze nel campo delle scienze storiche antiche o presentare eventualmente le proprie ricerche nel settore. L’occasione si prefigge inoltre di favorire un incontro tra studiosi, al fine di discutere in modo costruttivo il proprio lavoro scientifico e di confrontare i risultati delle ricerche in corso.

-CALL FOR PAPERS for the 2010 ASGLE Joint APA/AIA meetings in Anaheim, CA:  “Greek and Latin Inscriptions: New Discoveries.”  Organized by Stephen V. Tracy and Paul Iversen.

            As archaeological artifacts that preserve writing from the ancient past, inscriptions constitute one of our most valuable primary sources of evidence for the ancient Mediterranean world.  Their importance cannot be stressed too much.  The Society seeks to create a panel that will offer to the audience new and ex-citing discoveries about Greek and Latin inscriptions. The Society, therefore, welcomes papers that present new texts, new joins, new archaeological find spots, new readings, new interpretations or new methodologies.  We are particularly interested in papers that discuss truly new and important texts or really innovative interpretations or methodologies.

            Abstracts will be adjudicated anonymously by a committee of ASGLE and should not be longer than one page.  Please follow the instructions for the format of Individual Abstracts that will appear in the Program Guide of the October issue of the APA Newsletter.  Abstracts should be sent electronically in either Word 97-2004 for-mat with a .doc extension or as a PDF to: Stephen Tracy, Vice-President, ASGLE at stracy@ias.edu. The deadline is February 1, 2009.

Epigraphic Saturday, Cambridge, February 28, 2009.

A message from Dorothy Thompson:

For many years Joyce Reynolds has run an Epigraphic Saturday in the Faculty of Classics of the University of Cambridge. What in the past has been a solo enterprise will this year be a Faculty undertaking in honour of Joyce, who celebrated her ninetieth birthday on 18 December 2008. This celebratory meeting is planned for Saturday 28 February 2009 starting at 10.30 am and ending at around 6.00 pm (with drinks). Lunch will be provided in the Cast Gallery of the Classics Faculty on the Sidgwick Site.

The programme for this Super Epigraphic Saturday is now nearly fixed. Once the programme is finalised details will be available on the Faculty website: https://www.classics.cam.ac.uk/.

We also hope, on the regular pattern of these Epigraphic Saturdays, to have some time for a few short Announcements or Queries, i.e. reports on new projects or specific queries and questions where a group of specialist may be able to help with a problem (10 minutes maximum). If you would like to offer such a short announcement or presentation please would you contact me with details as soon as possible.

You are most cordially invited to this event. In order to get the numbers for lunch I would ask you please to let me know if you are able to come as soon as possible and by 15 February at the latest.

Libyan Epigraphy Colloquium, February 2009, London

Roman Libya: epigraphy, geography and archaeology

The Society for Libyan Studies and the Inscriptions of Roman Cyrenaica project are organising a joint colloquium and workshop, 13-14 February 2009, at King’s College London.

The Inscriptions of Roman Cyrenaica project (https://ircyr.kcl.ac.uk) which is funded by the Leverhulme Trust, aims to publish, online, the inscriptions of Roman Cyrenaica collected by Joyce Reynolds, together with related geographical data, provided by the Pleiades project (https://pleiades.stoa.org/) and illustrative material from the Ward-Perkins Archive at the British School at Rome. An associated project, Concordia, (https://concordia.atlantides.org) is producing an electronic reprint of Joyce Reynolds and John Ward-Perkins, Inscriptions of Roman Tripolitania.

The aim of the colloquium/workshop is to bring together scholars working on the history, archaeology and geography of Roman Libya; we plan to describe and compare our projects, and to discuss ways in which we can help and support one another, particularly by exploiting new media.
