Cluster of Excellence – Understanding Written Artefacts

Studying Written Artefacts: Challenges and Perspectives

The conference will take place over three days of panel presentations structured in two parallel sessions, on 27–29 September 2023; an additional programme will be duly announced.

For a long time, researchers have debated when writing was invented and written artefacts first produced. They have asked whether this was a peculiarity of homo sapiens and what writing actually is, considering whether posing such a question is, in fact, methodologically possible. Most researchers can agree that the invention and use of writing has had such a profound impact on the history of humanity that its consequences continue even in the most sophisticated digital applications, even though manuscripts and writings still remain with us.

This conference will provide a unique forum for sharing experiences and views among the international community working on written artefacts, showcasing pioneering research, and developing new ideas.

UWA Conference 2023 welcomes panels and paper proposals that draw attention to emerging research topics and innovative methodological approaches from within the humanities and natural and computer sciences, on the study of creation, transmission, and archiving of written artefacts. Welcome also are contributions on single written artefacts important for their revealing features or their challenging typology and categorization, and small and large scale theoretical reflections on written artefacts. Proposals which transcend the study of particular geographical areas and apply comparative and/or global perspectives are strongly encouraged.

As for written artefacts we take the broad working definition of any artificial or natural object that have written or pictorial (visual) signs. This definition includes the traditional notion of manuscript, in all attested book forms, and inscription, and at the same time goes well beyond these broad categories.

The call for paper is open now.

Digital Epigraphy in 2022: A Report from the Scoping Survey of the FAIR Epigraphy Project

Dear fellow epigraphers,we are excited to share the results of a survey circulated on behalf of FAIR Epigraphy earlier this year! We have just published the report “Digital Epigraphy in 2022: A Report from the Scoping Survey of the FAIR Epigraphy Project” on Zenodo.You can access the report either as an interactive HTML version  or download the report as a PDF.We have gathered responses from all our partners and 27 epigraphic projects that provide a representative sample of the discipline in 2022.Based on the responses, we plan to undertake several in-depth interviews with our partners to confirm some of our assumptions and to draft a concrete plan for the following three years. However, it is clear from the survey responses, that we should direct our attention to three main tasks:1. implementing and hosting standards for epigraphic vocabularies (e.g. inscription type, material, object etc.) 2. implementing and hosting standards for bibliographical records (e.g. stable and unique records for all major epigraphic editions) 3. building a platform for FAIR and Open Epigraphy on the infrastructure provided by the University of Oxford (CSAD), that will function as an information hub, providing not only training and good practice examples, but also hosting the resources and tools.We hope to run a similar survey annually to track any progress within the discipline and closely monitor changing needs of individual projects in digital epigraphy.Lastly, we would like to invite you for an informal evening of digital epigraphy, organised by FAIR Epigraphy and held at CIEGL XVII in Bordeaux on Thursday 1 Sep 2022 (the exact location will be specified shortly before the event).With best wishes,FAIR Epigraphy teamImran Asif, Petra Heřmánková, Marietta Horster, Jonathan Prag The FAIR Epigraphy Project https://www.csad.ox.ac.uk/fair-epigraphy

Das neue Herausgeber-Team freut sich über Beiträge zur Alten Geschichte und Altertumskunde vom Anbeginn der griechischen Geschichte bis zur Spätantike, einschließlich Editionen und (historischen) Interpretationen von epigraphischen und papyrologischen Quellen. Kürzeren Anmerkungen im Bereich der Papyrologie bieten die Korr. Tyche (Bemerkungen zu Papyri) ein geeignetes Format. we are pleased to announce that TYCHE-online has a new homepage. All articles published in TYCHE are now available open access at https://tyche.univie.ac.at/. Additionally, TYCHE will continue its tradition as print journal; the individual issues can be purchased from the publishing house Holzhausen (https://shop.verlagholzhausen.at/collections/tyche).

The new editorial team is looking forward to receiving contributions on Ancient History and Classical Studies from the beginning of Greek History to Late Antiquity, as well as editions and (historical) interpretations of inscriptions and papyri. Shorter papyrological remarks are welcome for the rubric Korr. Tyche (Bemerkungen zu Papyri). We would also like to draw your attention to our Adnotationes epigraphicae which provide a forum for corrections and brief comments in the fields of Latin and Greek epigraphy. Further, we are happy to receive detailed reviews of epigraphical or papyrological editions and corpora. All contributions are subject to a double-blind peer review process.

Inscriptions of Libya: An International Workshop (April 5, 2022)

An online workshop organised by the Institute of Classical Studies, and the Society for Libyan Studies, to mark the online publication of the Greek and Latin inscriptions of Libya (InsLib).

The last few years have seen the publication online, and open access, of the majority of known inscriptions from Cyrenaica (largely in Greek) and Tripolitania (largely in Latin). The purpose of this workshop is to allow the main contributors to present their work, and explain how new technology has enabled collaboration, and so the creation of rich resources for the study of the history of Libya; they will also consider the implications for future work.

Speakers: Charlotte Roueché (KCL), Caroline Barron (Durham), Francesca Bigi (Roma), Gabriel Bodard (ICS), Catherine Dobias-Lalou (Paris/Bologna), Alessandra Giovenco (British School at Rome).

This course aims at introducing the participants to the study of Greek inscriptions from the Archaic Period to the Roman times with an emphasis on the inscriptions of the Aegean Islands. Students will have the opportunity to become familiar with the nature of epigraphic documents, will be introduced to the expertise required in the field of Greek epigraphy and will understand how inscriptions are invaluable documents for the knowledge of Ancient History.

Digital Humanities + EpiDoc workshop, Cyprus 23–27, 2022

Call for participants: Digital Humanities Introductory Workshop

The Departments of Classics and Philosophy and History and Archaeology, University of Cyprus (UCY), invite participants to join a 5-day Digital Humanities Introductory Workshop, to take place between 23-27 May 2022 at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia.

The workshop will offer introductions to a range of archaeological and philological technologies, including features of EpiDoc XML, linguistic analysis (including treebanking and translation alignment), 3D Imaging, GIS, and Linked Open Geographical Data.

The workshop will be suitable for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and early career scholars with little or no previous experience of digital humanities. The workshop will be capped at 20 participants. A limited number of spaces will also be available for remote, asynchronous participants. Those participating physically will have to comply with UCY’s safety protocols, which will depend on the epidemiological situation during the time the event is held. Further details on the programme, preparation material (software, readings) and safety protocols will be sent to the selected participants in advance.
