Epigraphy and Gender in the Graeco-Roman World (SCS, Jan 5-8, 2022)

The Society for Classical Studies 2022 Annual Meeting

January 5-8, 2022

San Francisco, CA

Call for Papers for a Panel Sponsored by the

American Society of Greek and Roman Epigraphy (ASGLE)

“Epigraphy and Gender in the Graeco-Roman World”

Organized by Jonathan Edmondson (York University)

The aim of this panel is to explore the multiple ways in which inscribed texts of all types contributed towards constructions of gender in ancient Greece and Rome. From honorific statue-bases set up in the public spaces of ancient cities to the tens of thousands of epitaphs displayed in burial grounds to inscribed votive offerings set up in public sanctuaries or in private cult spaces, inscriptions played a key role in defining gender norms in public and in private life. Less formal types of writing such as graffiti in various media or curse-tablets may have served to contest or reinforce these societal norms. This panel seeks to explore gender relations across as full a range of social levels as possible: from the elite to the “middling sort” to slaves and manumitted slaves. It has often been argued that it is difficult to uncover authentic female voices within epigraphic repertoires, since the production of inscriptions was significantly controlled by men. Is it possible by using new interpretive techniques to read epigraphic texts against the grain and thereby uncover previously ignored aspects of gender relations? The panel ideally will present a variety of methodological approaches that range from close readings of individual texts to broader analyses of texts in bulk drawn either from single locations or from wider geographical contexts, where appropriate, involving comparative discussion.

Abstracts should be a maximum of 500 words (bibliography excluded), suitable for a 20-minute presentation. Please follow the SCS “Guidelines for Authors of Abstracts” (https://classicalstudies.org/annual-meeting/guidelines-authors-abstracts) and ensure that no reference is made to the author’s identity. Please send your anonymous abstract, as a Word or PDF e-mail attachment, to Jonathan Edmondson at jedmond@yorku.ca by March 1, 2021. Abstracts will be evaluated anonymously by two reviewers. (Please note that authors submitting abstracts must be SCS members in good standing and will need to register for the 2022 meeting.)

Participants studying an inscription in RomeWe are delighted to announce the 5th Postgraduate Course in Epigraphy at the British School in Rome from July 12-21st 2021.

Based at the British school at Rome, this taught course offers a nine day introduction to the scholarship, editorial practice, and publication of epigraphic materials from a variety of different approaches. The aim of the course, intended for postgraduate scholars of ancient history, archaeology, museum studies and the classics, is to provide training and a practical experience in the use of epigraphy as source. The course will examine the numerous contexts in which epigraphy is presented (in situ, museums, archives and in published formats (e.g. reference works and online databases) and explore the process of editing and publishing epigraphic materials.  The course consists of daily lectures, museum visits, epigraphic ambulatio through the city of Rome, as well as research sessions at the British School’s library and a trip to Ostia. Museum and site visits  include gallery lectures by curators and special permits to collections not open to the public. Workshops at a series of different sites will develop skills in creating practical study materials such as drawings, rubbings, squeezes and photographs of inscriptions. Participants will also have an opportunity to further their own research through an independent project (generally a specific area of his/her epigraphic research) which will be developed during the course and presented in a short paper on the final day.

Application deadline: Friday February 19th.

Testimonials, reports & itineraries from previous courses, as well as an information pack for the 2021 course can be found on the course website:

Epigraphic Ontology at Linked Pasts 6

On Wednesday, December 2 at 17:00 GMT, the Linked Pasts 6 conference will host a session called ‘Cluster 3: Epigraphy and documents’. A proposal for activities about an Epigraphic Ontology, presented by Hugh Cayless, Thomas Kollatz, Pietro Liuzzo, and Elli Mylonas, will be introduced. During the session participants will also be able to propose changes to the plan of activity, which is intended to be as flexible and open to changes as possible.

The following is an extract from the proposal for the activities:

Most digital epigraphical corpora are based on EpiDoc: TEI XML for epigraphic documents. In addition, each of the many digital epigraphic corpora has a set of (usually controlled) vocabularies which they deploy as part of their corpus metadata. Several efforts have been made to reconcile vocabularies across corpora, in order to facilitate interchange, cross-corpus searching and other forms of aggregation. The most recent and extensive were the vocabularies created for the EAGLE project by reconciling the vocabularies of contributing projects (eagle-network.eu/resources/vocabularies/). The resulting authoritative lists are extremely useful for cross corpus search, but they lack the relationship definitions found in formal ontologies.
